Hard to start when cold...

Hey all, I'm having issues with the Laser. Car is hard to start when cold, cranks maybe 10-15 times, then starts. Idle is high, 2500-2800, but drops down to 75-850 when warmed up. Car re-starts fine after intial start up. Replaced the coolant temp sensor and found some wires cracked/broken. I fixed them, left the battery unplugged for 45 minutes. She still idles high and still takes a while to start. Boost leak test, BISS all checked.

Thanks in advance, Jason

Do an IAC check. Try the startup with the IAC unplugged.

Does it still have the FIAV and coolant lines running to the TB?

I can almost guarantee that the issue is TB related.

Good call on the FIAV. I have neither the FIAV nor the IAC/ISC, and I get a hard idle at start up, but not this bad.

Do an actual check, too. That was meant to be 2 separate items.

IAC check was done when the motor was being built (3 months ago). I pulled it and it started in 3-4 cranks. I plugged it back in and it again started in 3-4 cranks. I will let it sit over night and see what the outcome is tomorrow morning

sounds like a possible bad connection on the plug contacts. If it continues to respond to plugged/unplugging the IAC, I'd grab a q-tip and some contact cleaner and hit it with that. I've had that problem on a few old starters.

Well, I cut the wires down to where they were broken and crimped on female spade connectors, also cleaned the male spades on the sensors.

What kind of fuel pump is in the car? If its a walbro and an old one they will bleed off pressure when the check valve goes in them. I've seen this on a ton of hard start threads, and I've had this problem the last few days with the car I've been working on also. I've had to start it and turn it over a few times, let off, and do it again and it starts after a turn or two on the second try.

Also, are you sure that you replaced the temp sensor that goes to the ecu? There is a small one for the gauge and another for the fan that have nothing to do with the car cranking.

Yep, thats it. Just making sure because I see where a lot of people swap out one of the other temp sensors.
